Irish Sports Monitor Report 2009

(1st July 11Irish Sports Council Publishes Irish Sports Monitor Report 2009.  Recovery in Sports Participation in Ireland Under Way

The third annual Irish Sports Monitor report, for the year 2009 recently issued by the Irish Sports Council reflects positively in terms of sports participation in Ireland but shows a reduction in the rates of volunteers in sport. The report, written by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) on behalf of the Council, measures adult participation in sport and physical activity and compares it with the previously published information from 2007 & 2008.

The report shows that there were increases in the levels of

  • Participation in sport increased from 30.8% in 2008 to 33.5% in 2009

  • Sedentarism fell from 18.2% in 2007 to 15.5% in 2009

  • Rates of volunteering in sport fell from 8.2% in 2007 to 6.8% in 2009

  • Attendance at sporting events recovered to 17% after a drop in 2008

  • Swimming remained the most popular physical activity (7.2%)

National Bike week – RAMP RAGE

(15th June 11) As one of the highlight events of National Bike Week Donegal Sports Partnership has invited Ireland’s No1 Extreme Sports Road Show to Donegal. RampRage who are setting up their first ever gig in Letterkenny at the Letterkenny Aura Leisure Complex on Wednesday 22nd June from 6:30pm-9:00pm.

‘RampRage’ is a team of professional athletes delivering show-stopping demonstrations from the world of freestyle BMX. As part of a program of events surrounding the National
Bike Week 2011, RampRage are teaming up with Donegal Sports Partnership to bring the public a high octane Freestyle BMX show as well as BMX workshops from the best in the
business.

This is world class entertainment not to be missed!!  Admission €5 Adults, €2 children u-12yrs. RampRage is a product of the charity T13, Ireland’s Largest Urban Playground

Minister Honours Special Volunteers In Irish Sport

(1st June 11)  Eleven dedicated volunteers who have made outstanding contributions to sport in Ireland were today honoured by the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring T.D., at an awards ceremony which took place at the Aviva Stadium.  The ‘National Awards to Volunteers in Irish Sports’, celebrates the contributions of volunteers to Irish sport.

It’s a Walk in the Park – Donegal Walking Week

(12th May11)  Why not join us with Donegal’s County Mayor, Cllr Cora Harvey and other special guests to take part in the 1km Challenge at 1:00pm in the Letterkenny Town Park. The 1km challenge is a set route around the park which anyone can complete at their own pace regardless of age, ability or fitness levels. The route is fully accessible and open to all abilities.

Golf Mater Class at Newtownstewart Golf Club

(20th April 11) Strabane District Council, in partnership with Omagh District Council and Derry City Council, has secured funding from the North West PEACE III Partnership for an innovative project aimed at developing the capacity of local coaches and clubs.

The next phase of the programme will include the delivery of ‘Coach Master Classes,’ the next of which is scheduled to take place on Friday 29th April 2011. Places on the programmes will be offered on a first come first served basis. I would appreciate it if you would display the poster/flyers on your notice board within your club facilities.

Vollyball Tournament

(19th April 11)  A Volleyball Tournament will be held in the Letterkenny Community Centre on Sunday 22nd May (and possible Sunday 29th May, depending on how many  teams enter).   We are looking for men’s, women’s or mixed teams.  Entry is €50.00 per team, teams are 6 players + 1 sub min.  The competition starts at 10:00 and will finish according to the number of games needed.  To register your team please contact Kasia at 087 6745020 or liberodscs@gmail.com.  All entries must be in before the 10th of May.
